Mavimatt
A one-of-a-kind UFO armchair reinterpreted through Omar Hassan’s painting.
Mavimatt × Omar Hassan UFO was created in 2018 as a one-of-one collaboration between Mavimatt and contemporary artist Omar Hassan.
For the project, Mavimatt’s signature UFO Armchair became the canvas for a direct artistic intervention, bringing the chair’s sculptural form into dialogue with Hassan’s expressive use of colour and gesture.
Created at the Mavimatt atelier, the work was developed entirely as a unique piece, with the artist intervening directly on the outer shell while preserving the recognisable identity of UFO.
The completed artwork was later presented at Contini Art Gallery in London, where it was exhibited alongside Hassan’s work and subsequently acquired.
The UFO as a Sculptural Canvas
The project began with the idea of transforming the UFO Armchair into a surface for artistic expression, without altering the identity of its enveloping sculptural form.
The dark outer shell provided the background for Omar Hassan’s intervention, allowing colour and gesture to develop across a three-dimensional object rather than a conventional flat canvas.
As the marks follow the curves of the chair, the artwork changes continuously with the viewer’s perspective, creating a dialogue between form, movement and colour.
Created at the Mavimatt Atelier
In 2018, Omar Hassan was invited to the Mavimatt atelier to work directly on the UFO Armchair and develop the intervention on the piece itself.
The artist applied his pictorial language by hand across the shell, building a polychromatic composition of flowing marks and vivid colour that follows the geometry and movement of the UFO.
Rather than covering the original design, the intervention works with its proportions and curvature, turning the chair into a unique composition in which Mavimatt’s sculptural design and Hassan’s artistic gesture coexist within the same object.
From the Atelier to London
Following its completion in Italy, the one-of-one artwork travelled to London, where it was presented at Contini Art Gallery during an event dedicated to Omar Hassan’s work.
Displayed alongside the artist’s other works, the UFO entered a contemporary-art context beyond its original design setting.
Signed by Omar Hassan and acquired during the exhibition, the piece carries a documented journey from its creation at the Mavimatt atelier to its presentation and sale in London, becoming part of the artwork’s history and provenance.
